When you compare web host plans, you will first need to consider what operating system you need. If you need PHP, use Linux. If you need ASP or .NET, use Windows. Learn more about web hosting operating systems.

1. Do you need Windows or Linux hosting?

Linux hosting is the most common type of web hosting. It is usually cheaper and offers many free scripts. If you aren't sure what to pick, choose Linux.

Windows hosting is usually more expensive. If you need to run ASP or .NET scripts, you will need Windows hosting.

More Information

The Hosting Wizard lets you choose between the 3 major types of hosting plans: Shared, VPS, and Dedicated. Shared hosting works for most people but a robust web site may require VPS hosting or dedicated hosting.

2. What type of hosting package do you need?

Shared hosting is the cheapest and most common type of hosting package. Your sites will be stored on the same server and use the same IP address as many (often hundreds of) other people’s sites. Learn more about shared hosting.

A Virtual Private Server (VPS) is like your own virtual server running inside another server. The hardware will still be shared with other users but the software won't. This lets you customize the software to your heart's content. Learn more about VPS hosting.

A Dedicated hosting package will give you your own server so you don’t have to worry about sharing software or hardware resources. It is the most expensive but provides the most reliability. Learn more about dedicated hosting.

3. How much disk space do you need?

If you are hosting a lot of big image files, you will need a lot of disk space. Packages that come with a lot of disk space usually also come with a lot of monthly bandwidth so the site can support a lot of visitors. Read our Web hosting wizard options FAQ to learn more about disk space and bandwidth.

4. What is your monthly budget?
